MEMBERSHIP DEFINITIONS
Member (M) - Members are:
- graduates from a transportation related program at a school of recognized standing and in the active practice of transportation or traffic work; or,
- have five years of professional experience in transportation or traffic engineering work.
Institute Affiliate (IA) - Institute Affiliates are persons who are not otherwise eligible for ITE membership or who may be accumulating experience towards ITE membership and:
- is engaged in transportation or traffic engineering work;
- is in a related field and who, by virtue of stature or official position, is in a position to contribute to the work of transportation professionals; or,
- is engaged in commerce or industry and comes into frequent contact with transportation and/or traffic engineers and who has an interest in the profession or is in a position to work with and assist transportation professionals.
Student Member (S) - Student Members are:
- enrolled as a Student in a graduate or undergraduate school of recognized standing and registered in at least one course in transportation or traffic engineering unless exempted by the faculty advisor of a Student Chapter of ITE; and,
- not otherwise eligible for another grade of membership.
Student membership shall cease if a Student Member withdraws from the required academic course or fails to apply for transfer to Member within one year after graduation and accepting a position in the field of transportation or traffic engineering.
Fellow (F) - There is no direct admission to the grade of Fellow; specific application to the Institute is required. Fellows must:
- have been in the grade of Member for at least five years;
- have ten years of professional experience;
- have attained significant professional stature which may be demonstrated by being a legally registered engineer; by having a peer-refereed license or certification based on education, examination and experience; or by comparable evidence of professional status as determined by the Board;
- have had responsible charge of important transportation or traffic engineering work including scientific, educational and managerial activities, for at least five years; and,
- have demonstrated an active commitment and contribution to the work of ITE or the profession.
Section Affiliates (LAF) - are persons who are not otherwise eligible to be members of the Institute, and have full membership in the Section. Section Affiliates are:
- not eligible to be voting members of the Institute but are accumulating experience toward Institute membership;
- in sub-professional work in transportation or traffic engineering;
- students in a recognized engineering school;
- professionally engaged in related fields;
- in a position to work with and assist transportation or traffic engineers by virtue of official positions or commercial employment; or
- others whose participation would benefit the Section, upon approval of the Section Executive Board.
